Twelve castles in Ireland you can actually sleep in

September 8, 2026 by steve

Ireland has more castles per square mile than almost anywhere in Europe, and nearly all of them hand you a ticket at the door and send you home at five. A dozen of them hand you a key instead. We reviewed the open castles that take bookings and are worth a two-night stay. The price range was wider, from $150 per night at a Dublin-area castle to a Gothic pile, the Mayo estate. It includes a 310-acre private island reached by the hotel’s own car ferry. Between them lies a Gothic pile in a county most visitors only drive through. It holds Ireland’s largest inhabited castle with twenty rooms. A 310-acre private island is reached by the hotel’s own car ferry.

The part that trips people up isn’t the price, though — it’s the room number. Half of these properties have rooms inside the medieval building. They also offer rooms in a courtyard, a lodge, or a garden wing, sold under the same castle name. Guests who book the cheapest rate they find online routinely arrive to discover they’re sleeping eighty metres from the castle they flew over to stay in. Our list says which building each rate actually puts you in, along with the nearest practical airport, current rate range, and the honest reason each one made the cut. Rates verified September 2026.

Then call 800-766-2911 and we’ll book the castle, the car, and the tour around it.
