Most of Europe’s great castles sell you a ticket and send you home at five. These ten hand you a key. All are open and taking bookings for two nights or more, and all of them are on the European mainland — our Britain and Ireland castles have lists of their own.
They are ordered by what you’d expect to pay, from a 12th-century Spanish fortress at under a hundred dollars a night to an Umbrian castle where the suites carry a two-night minimum.

Castle hotels are small. Sigüenza has 81 rooms; Otočec has 16 and Reschio has 36, split between the castle and an old vestry, and they are not interchangeable. The room that makes the stay — the one in the tower, the one facing the lough, the one with the private terrace — is rarely the one an online engine hands you, and half of these properties close for part of the year.
